Sometimes the subtitles are perfect sometimes its not worth having them - Its as if someone who isnt listening is writing them. We keep the TV low so we don't wake our boy. I'm not deaf (yet) but If I am one day the quality of the sub titles worries me.

Subtitles have never really been any good, many tv progs just dont bother to transmit them , Iv'e even heard that some so called tv stars wont permit them on their progs. But if you are deaf like me they are the only option available.
While the deaf comunity remain a silent minority ( no pun intended) nothing will improve

I thought subtitles were automatically generated by speech recognition software?

So is the Humax good for a deaf person - Should I recommend it to my deaf friends?

The thing that bugs me about subtitles these days is that they don't seem to move about the screen like they did with analogue page 888 of cefax. This is really annoying with documentaries when they cut to a person talking to camera and the subtitle blots out the caption telling you who the person is. Is this an unavoidable trait of digital subtitles or are subtitlers getting lazy?

Any unit that has the facility to record subtitles is a boon to the deaf or hard of hearing. Video recorders that could do that were expensive and hard to find, in fact I believe they are no longer made.
To answer your question, yes recommend away, I have, and always had favourable feedback.

One point to note is that not only does the Hummy automatically record any sub-titles, but you can turn them on/off during playback. Not all machines that can record sub-titles can do that. I've a Panasonic Freeview HDD recorder on which once you've set a recording to include subtitles you can't get rid of them during its playback.
