View Full Version : Elinker problem - can't see 9200T

I can't get Elinker to 'see' my 9200T. When first connected via the USB and Humax switched on, Windows XP detected the new hardware and installed the driver. However, when I then booted Elinker and tried to connect I kept getting the 'Initialisation of receiver failed! Restart receiver' error message at the bottom. No amount of restarts etc would solve the problem.

Any suggestions please?

Using an Acer Travelmate 4100 I found that Media Elinker would connect to the 9200T at the first try. However, once the connection was broken, such as by switching the laptop off or setting the 9200T to standby, subsequent Elinker connection attempts consistently failed. The only viable way to reconnect involved a full hard drive restore, only to experience the same situation all over again! However, hanging a generic usb hub off the laptop and connecting the Hummy through the hub has achieved a completely stable solution. I did this after a hard drive restore so that I was certain of a clean system.

Flakey or what? I suspect timing niggles with the9200T usb port, but cannot be certain. All my other usb kit works fine with the laptop. I feel that all the PVR manufacturers have a lot to answer for - going to market with inadequately developed kit, particularly their software.

On another topic,I have not experienced a crash since updating to the .04 software but it is early days as yet.

Funny that because I think there was another user who solved the problem he was having connecting the the Humax by buying a powered USB hub.

Was yours a powered hub too?

If so I am wondering what all this power over usb thing is all about :?

i too use a powered hub, and have to unplug the hummy and take to another room......therefore no other business for the hummy to do other than upload to the pc....not had any probs at all with uploading!!

so far

keeferoo hi. What would happen if you didnt use a powered hub in your case? I.e. plug the USB cable straight from the hummy to the PC

hi marc.... not sure, but will it a go when i next connect to pc.

If downloading tv from the hummy to pc, it takes about half the real time of file to download....

so, for example, a 2 hour film takes about 1 hour (maybe 45-50 mins)..... i think this sounds about right from what i've read............ is this similar to you or anyone else?? Still seems slow though (i have read some of the other threads about this, all kinda makes sense but still a little over my head really  ) Still, i was expecting worse from the reviews etc i read before buying it!

let you know how i get on with unpowered usb 8)

I kept getting failures with my laptop, and finally got around to trying Hummy with desktop. Worked fine, transferred 4.95gb in about 2 hours without one failure/lost connection.

I don't know why...maybe USB ports on some laptops are poor?

Love to know the techie reason.

Also, it actually was really no hassle unplugging Hummy and taking upstairs.

I'm beginning to think that the specific type of USB chipset and drivers in each PC has a bearing on this.

I would suggest to anyone still having problems with USB to try upgrading the USB drivers for the chipset on your motherboard.

Keithatrochdale, have you tried this approach?

Interesting - my laptop is my work one, and I very much doubt it has uptodate drivers, as we're not allowed to do anything in terms of updating.

Yet my desktop gets updated regularly.

Certainly some USB chipsets are better/more reliable than others. The NEC ones seem to give the best results with most devices and the nVidia nForce2 chipsets - providing you're running v4 drivers or later - are also pretty good. The worst ones, IMHO, are the SiS ones.

It's also worthwhile turning off the power management on all the 'USB Root Hub' entries in the 'Device Manager'. Probably worth turning off the screen saver and other power saving features as well - just to be on the safe side. A decent power supply in the PC can also make a big difference to how well a USB device works. (Possibly why the guy with the laptop found it worked when connected through a powered hub?)

Further to my original post of 8th April and various subsequent posts about powered USB hubs, I can confirm that the external hub which I have used to obtain a stable elinker connection is not independently powered. When you have got the thing working you can find the actual USB port in the USB Controllers section of Device Manager. The Root Hub Power Tab indicates that the Hummy draws 100ma which is well within the 500ma design maximum of the port. I therefore suggest that the powered hub issue is a red herring and that the problem is more to do with protocol or timing. I trust that this helps.

I would tend to agree with you, Humax do admit that the e-linker software has problems with error checking. But the good news is that they are working on it, but or course the lockup problem has to be sorted more urgently. I have been told that it has moved higher up the priority chain, just not sure how long the chain is...... http://www.hummy.org.uk/invison/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I can connect without problems, but anything more than 5 mins or so of transfer and it crashes. I did get one 1/2 hour prog to my PC, but that was useing USB1.1 and took 12 hours odd. The USB is important to a lot of users, it will be good to get stuff moved to my PC, in case I get another HDD crash. I have also transferred .mp3s and .jpgs to the Hummy.

It has also been suggested that a PC should see the Hummy as it does any other mass storage device, but I don't think that will happen.
