You should easily be able to tell HD from SD on a 42" screen.
On the tennis, look at the net, on SD it is just a mush, on HD you can see the squares of the mesh.
Are you sure you are watching the HDMI input on your TV, not the AV Scart input? If you only have it connected via HDMI, no Scart, try reseating the connection at both ends.
What setting do you have the V-Format on?

The V-Format button on the remote is on the bottom row, second from the right.
As you press it each time, it will cycle through the Resolution options. e.g. if you are on BBC HD, it should cycle through 576p, 720p, 1080i, and Original, if your TV supports these resolutions. If your TV is a full HD, not HD Ready, supporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080, then the best picture on an HD channel would be by choosing 1080i.
However, if you choose Original, and leave it on this, it will just pass through the signal as broadcast through to your TV. So it will pass 1080i on HD channels, and it will pass 576 on SD channels and let your TV scale the picture. So, usually, this is the best option to choose.
I presume by HD cable, you are using an HDMI cable?
As I say, you should be able to easily see the difference between SD & HD.
